As a result of all this traffic, there is kind of a built in wake at the docks, but after awhile you don't pay attention to it. One of the ferry boat companies trick up their boats by having them shoot a big rooster tail of water out the stern & I have to admit they are very noticeable. Mackinac Island Harbor is an extremely busy place with ferry boats going back & forth between Mackinaw City & St Ignace seemingly all the time. Keep that in mind for your next visit to the island. It was a gruelling competition, but in the end we both agreed that Joann's was the best fudge in town so I stocked up. We must have stopped in a dozen stores explaining each time that we were taste-testing mission & would be back only if they were the winner.

We started out going to every fudge shop we could find in town & just getting samples including the more famous ones like Kilwins & Rybas, but some of the ones which are not as well known or found elsewhere. Nancy always kidded me on this trip about buying fudge along the way at various stops, so we decided to do a real test now that we were here in 'Fudge Heaven'. They both deserve great attaboys, because they both did so well in a tough race with very poor winds. Further, our neighbor in Wilmette, Tom Petkus, not only raced this year, but won in his J-105 Class. In fact, we discovered later that this year Alan Smith from our harbor joined this year's group of cruising boats & did well in his class. Furthermore, it is equally as famous for the Chicago to Mackinac & Port Horon to Mackinac sailboat races every year which bring a great influx of sailors up here in mid to late July. They cruise up north here every summer they can.ДЄs most of you know who have been to Mackinac ( pronounced Mackinaw no matter how it is spelled ), it is a very quaint community with no cars, lots of horse-drawn carriages & bicycles, the home of the Grand Hotel & Fort Mackinac, & more fudge shops than you can count. Later I met his wife who was a very nice lady as well. He must be a heck of a salesman with a memory like that. He remembered our address, being on our boat at that time & all kinds of details about the family. His boat was tied up on the other side of the dock right across from ours. He is now a VP of sales for a company in Michigan somewhere near Detroit. Since any of our family had seen him last, he had gone on & graduated from Purdue University, started a career in sales in Louisville, Ky., married a girl he met there & had a son who was starting at the University of Michigan this fall. It finally started to dawn on me that his dad was a doctor at Evanston Hospital, I think, & that our son Dan had dated his sister as well, & further, that Bob was also friendly with several of our nephews. To be honest, his name didn't ring a bell with me right away because that was probably 35 years ago, & there were quite a few boys around the house in those days dating one of our daughters or another. He said to me 'I'm Bob Keagy, I used to date your daughter Cary in high school'. It was hard to deny it after my friend had called me by name when we arrived so I had to admit that, yes indeed, I was. After my friend & I quit trying to outdo each other with our 'war' stories, this fellow came up to me & asked if I was Frank Zimmerman. While I was rehashing some our experiences with our long lost fellow-looper on the dock, I noticed another boater kind of hanging around behind us, but didn't think much about it. To say that was quite a coincidence turned out to be an understatement compared to the next boater I met on the dock. Later we discovered that there were 10 to 12 boats in the marina doing the loop, some of whom we had also encountered elsewhere along the trail. In fact, the skipper of that boat took our lines & we had quite a reunion then & there right on the dock.

When we arrived at Mackinac Island & were assigned our slip, we pulled in to find another boat from the loop trip who we had last seen in Melbourne, Florida docked in the next slip.
